7 Cover Letter Tips to Get You Noticed

If you're applying for an executive role, your cover letter matters more than you think. Would it surprise you to know that fewer than 5% of applications make it to interview.

So how do you stand out?

Most cover letters miss the mark. They’re too long, too self-focused or too generic. A great cover letter is short, sharp and tailored - written with purpose and intent.


1. Keep it Brief

One page only. Focus on the essentials. Avoid long intros or wordy statements. Get straight to the point.


2. Highlight the Match

Clearly connect your skills and experience to the role. For example: “With 10 years in aged care leadership and a Master’s in Health Management, I bring deep sector knowledge and strategic capability.” We like facts and figures, so tell us the matches with quantifiable data.


3. Show Motivation

Why this role? Why this company? Your motivation is critical. It tells us you’ve done your research and genuinely want this job, not any job.


4. Lead with a Hook

Open with something that makes us want to keep reading. A personal connection, shared value or story can make all the difference.


5. Make it Personal

Avoid generic “To whom it may concern” intros. Tailor each letter to the company, the role and the person who is hiring. Mention their mission, values or recent achievements.


6. Focus on Them

Your letter should explain how you can solve their problems, not just what you’re hoping to gain. Show how you’ll add value from day one.


7. Reveal Your Why

Use the cover letter to showcase your personality, purpose and values. Let us see what drives you and how you align with the organisation.
